WESTWOOD!!! Way under $25 – for STUNNING Sonoma Coast/Petluma Gap Chardonnay in the absolutely BANGIN’ 2021 vintage, from the caped crusader duo of winemaking wonderment, Philippe Melka and Maayan Koschitzky!!!! Whaaaaaaa?!
I’m flushed…my head is spinning, and I’m woefully short on oxygen…somebody get me a chilled glass of this golden ambrosia – STAT!!! (And leave the bottle!) 95 POINTS and a Publisher’s Pick, too? Great California goodness, Batman! Â
Roberts Road vineyard is one of the top plots in California for Burgundian-style Chardonnay – and a true OG that helped to define the Petaluma Gap. Tucked at the base of the northern edge of Sonoma Mountain, this cool-climate spot was planted to hay, to melons, and given over as grazing lands for cattle and sheep – up until the iconic Sangiacomo family planted vines back in the late 90s. Now, it is home to some of their preeminent fruit, and considered by many industry insiders to be on the short list for Cali’s best Chardonnay vineyards. How on earth we managed to score this, crafted by two of the best winemakers in the world, from arguably the top vintage of this century’s first quarter simply befuddles the noggin.Â
This is a Burgundy-invoking site since its inception, and the wine embraces that fully. Barrel-fermentation, with partial malolactic fermentation, and a smattering of new French oak barrels for aging, this wine is impressively balanced, impeccably full, and inconceivably complex. Ripe stone fruits dance angelically atop the traditional orchard fruits of apples and pears, followed by citrusy undercurrents cresting the ocean and wind-driven salty, mineral-y backbone that keeps this all pushing forward with precision, drive, and intensity. Toasty notes accent but never overpower – this is subtly spiced like the finest curry – ginger, cardamom, clove, but intricately interlaid with Melka & Maayan’s undeniable skill as the marquee. All for UNDER $25!!! 95 POINTS and sure to FLY!!!
