Oh, Brunello. We can’t drink enough of it. Especially when it is OVER 50% OFF! I’m pretty sure I already said DOUBLE 95 POINTS, right?! Glory be!! The much beloved Vallone family always seems to crush it – year in and year out, their Brunellos always seem to score and fare among the best of Brunello – in good years and bad. But this 2019??? Oh baby…it SOARS!!!
The first splash kicks your Italian-loving, la dolce vita instinct into overdrive – with dusty, baked earth that smells like the hillsides of Montalcino herself, followed by this gorgeous fresh and roasted scent of rosemary, with the sweet tang of luxurious balsamic, and then the absolute BLITZ of cherries! So many cherries – red, and black, sappy, tart, and soul-invigorating! There’s this savory note of roasted red peppers, then mint, sage, and a smattering of iron ore and charred volcanic rock. Fine, grippy tannins and the gentle kiss of oak comes through at the last – extending the finish of an already masterful work like J.R.R. Tolkien’s “Scouring of the Shire”. This is EPIC, my friends – an utterly class Brunello for a RIDONKULOUS price.
Francesca Vallone is the second generation winemaker, overseeing the ORGANIC agriculture in their 15 hectares, racking and blending in the cellars, and just kicking some serious Brunello booty with these wines. This 2019 is my favorite yet – and if you know the long and glorious history of Terre Nere here on Last Bottle – you know that is indeed saying something!!!
