Fuhgetaboutit!!!! Carl Doumani, the man who prodded Stags’ Leap Winery’s phoenix-like re-birth from the proverbial ashes in 1970, passed away a few months back, leaving behind a legacy cemented by his advocacy of a single grape – Petite Sirah. Less than 10k acres of this rare grape are planted in the entire world – with about 85% of that here in California – in no small part because of Carl’s wizardry with the darkly powerful grape. His 1970s-era wines are considered legendary (Stags’ Leap Winery’s 1974 Petite Sirah is one of my favorite Napa wines...EVER!). This 94 POINT 2020 vintage is a real treat – just absolutely JAMMING with dark, luscious berry fruits, and these spicy, earthy notes that lend it depth and length that lingers for DAYS! Ok, not literally days, but a long, long time. The structure is immense – for all you Cabernet lovers out there – but ultra-fine, and silky smooth…making this profoundly drinkable now, or 15 years from now!
