The Man. The Myth. The Legend. The wine world just isn’t the same without you, Sean. This man was amongst the planet's most iconic, offbeat, history-obsessed, well-dressed, and brilliantly talented (and whimsical) winemakers. Sean was…basically…the antithesis of corporate wine-making. A bohemian, an artist, a poet – a Bacchus incarnate who lived among us for but a while. His body has returned to stardust – but his spirit, his passion, and his poetic vision live on in each and every sip! What a wine! 93 POINTS and one heck of a party favor that needs to be experienced by any lover of the Bacchanalian arts! Smoky, meaty, spice bazzar sensations come steamrolling out the gate, with beautifully ripe plums, and dried Turkish figs, followed by a cascading medley of green peppers, sappy violets, lavender, black currants, mulberries, pomegranate molasses, and baked strawberry tarts. The panoply of fruits is seriously impressive, but the wine is far from fruity – a distinctive savoriness, with an air-dried beefiness, and a subtle smokiness of green woods and fragrant pine cones. As ever – this is a wine like no other…and a true inception-inducing shifter for your vinous consciousness. 

As ever – a different and unknown blend every year is the secret recipe behind Pleiades – with this year claiming “Sangiovese, Pinot Noir, Petite Sirah, Viognier, and OTHERS”. No laws, no tried and true methodology…the pursuit here is sheer pleasure and wonder. And boy, does this DELIVER!

Bolinas is where Sean started his label over 40 years ago, almost immediately gaining cult status amongst the vino cognoscenti of the Bay Area and beyond…even though he never made more than a few thousand cases. This new release of Pleiades XXXI Old Vines (the 31st, if your Roman is lacking) would have Sean shining down on us all – so fresh and balanced and terrifyingly easy to sip with bohemian ease!! These wines have never aimed to be “crowd-pleasing”, but I simply cannot fathom any wine lover not CRUSHING a chalice of this with a wide, toothy grin on their face.
