San Filippo Brunello di Montalcino Le Lucére 2018
“San Filippo is home to some of the best boutique Brunello today…” – Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate
Tuscany. Montalcino. Brunello. 96 POINTS (plus 95, double 94s, and global, universal praise from anyone who’s tasted this magical ambrosia…) – all at the BEST PRICE IN THE USA!!! Can I get a BOOYAH?!?! San Filippo is one of the top Tuscan estates, and Roberto Gianelli has made this one of the most remarkable estates ANYWHERE! We popped in for a couple nights a few months back (and also partied with Roberto at VinItaly in Verona over copious Champagne and bottomless negronis until the wee hours…), and DAMN! If this isn’t just a showstopper!
Seductively floral with red roses and cherry blossoms, plus some camphor and black tea aromatics for added complexity...simply IMPOSSIBLE not to love! But then…that first sweet sip seals the deal – loaded with red fruits galore – cherries, raspberries, red currants, and alpine strawberries, with whispers of blood orange, cocoa powder, and all manner of roasted, savory herbs!! Oh MY! Unendingly complex, with a salty, long, and mineral-driven finish – just a masterclass in Tuscan perfection. So soft and approachable now, but with a subtly woven structure that will carry this finely for another decade plus. Sunday roast? Tomato-based pasta? No…wait…EGGPLANT PARMIGIANA!!! Yes…just perfect.
At the very heart of Montalcino – close to the iconic Biondi Santi’s IL GREPPO vineyard, La Serena, and more – the San Filippo estate sits on 22 hectares, with an old farmhouse and chapel dating back to 1672. Le Lucére is their absolutely primo vineyard site, where sangiovese grosso thrives on a steep slope of clay, silt, and sandstone – just in the shadow of the Montalcino fortress. Super consultant and Tuscan LEGEND Paolo Caciorgna guides the winemaking, with the day-to-day under the watchful gaze of Thomas Bianciardi. 96 POINTS! We got all we could – not $135, not even $85…UNDER $70!!! This absolutely ROCKS! Get three and space it out over the next decade. I’m getting six – ‘cause, well, life’s too short and this is too friggin’ good!! Fantastic stuff that simply must not be missed!
** I gotta give a shout-out to Thomas Bianciardi here – San Filippo had the most immaculate, spotlessly clean cellar and winery space I’ve yet seen in Italy. It reminded me of a few 3 Michelin star kitchens – attention to detail, pride, and accountability is a good foundation for making world-class fruit the very best it can be! **
