Peake Ranch Pinot Noir Sta. Rita Hills 2021

Peake Ranch Pinot Noir Sta. Rita Hills 2021

“...a brilliant value in Pinot Noir that would whomp many a Premier Cru Burgundy.” – Jeb Dunnuck

Time for that hound-dogging, wolf-whistling golden age of cartoon moment…AHHHH-WOOOO-GA!!!! Oh baby – pick your jaw up off the floor, roll your tongue back into your mouth, and (gently) re-insert those bulging eyeballs back where they belong! PEAKE RANCH!!!! We kicked off the day after our Spring Marathon with a PEAKE RANCH extravaganza – and it was an all-time MONSTER day of Cali-Coastal goodness – most of which was gone in a flash. Welp…we kept this 94 POINT gem out of all that madness…’cause it deserves its own day of sheer pinot PLEASURE!!! Only $22 too?!?! YES!!!!

Just to re-cap in case you were lacking as much sleep as I was in all that Marathon aftermath goodness…Peake Ranch is an ELITE S.R.H. winery, with an impressive array of UC Davis alums running the show like a full-time Masters Class symposium. It’s an impressive think tank of vinous talent…blending fruit from two famed sites: The legendary John Sebastiano vineyard and their own Peake Ranch estate, with a near equal split of California heritage and Burgundy clones (667, 115, Calera, Hyde, Pommard, and Swan)...simply spellbinding! Check it out!!

Mike Anderson: winemaker. He served as a researcher, author, and educator at UC Davis for 30+ years — including running their Oakville Station program (you know, the heart of TO KALON vineyard that was handed off for research purposes)!

Dr. Maria Nikolantonaki: consulting enologist. She has degrees in winemaking from Greece and Bordeaux (literally a doctor of wine), before post-doc work at UC Davis that got her wrapped up in this project. Currently a professor of wine at University of Dijon.

I’m not even covering their assistant winemaker, Max (Masters in Vit & Enology) or their owners, John & Gill Wagner who, when not being simply badass philanthropists (Google them), also have a UC Davis winemaking certificate (that’s how John met Mike.). Soooo…I think I’ve established these folks know what they’re doing, right?!?!?

This PROVES it. Absolutely DECADENT bouquet of raspberry tea, and violets, and peonies, with lavender and wild strawberry too…YES! There’s some serious spice, and cool blueberry cobbler things going on, with this powdery pastille candied note, and the cooling, hyper-freshness of spearmint and rhubarb…WOWZA! As spicy and coastally cool as Santa Rita Hills should be, with the power and darkness that has made SRH the HOTTEST name in the Pinot game over the last decade. 94 POINTS, people! Just $22!

This will FLY – no question. How much can you make your own before it’s gone forever?

I’m getting one more case just to be safe…while it lasts!!!

** R.I.P. to a Napa Valley pioneer, and the unchallenged King of Petite Sirah, Carl Doumani. What a legacy you carved, forever tilting at windmills. “To dream the impossible dream, that is my quest.” - Don Quixote **
