Mount Eden Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Santa Cruz Mountains 2020
95 POINTS on this GROUNDBREAKING Santa Cruz Mountain's Cabernet Sauvignon! MOUNT EDEN coming at you for a full 64+% OFF!
Mount Eden is BACK, good people!!! One of California’s most historic wineries – bar none – and as much as I have backflipped for their Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays over the years…it was a bottle of this Cabernet Sauvignon that stands as the best wine I’ve ever had from the Santa Cruz Mountains. Yes, better than any Monte Bello I’ve ever had. And this MIRACLE of 2020? Well, well, WELL!!! It’s just a baby, of course – these old-school, cool-climate, 60s-&-70s-era invoking Cabernet Sauvignons reward the ever-patient, delayed-gratification wine masochists – but…BUT! Even at just five years in…the potential is starting to flush like winter’s trio of black trumpets, hedgehogs, and yellowfoot chanterelle mushrooms on the Sonoma Coast! The wine experts (who bestowed double 94s and a 95 on this beauty) gave this a range of a solid 25 + years of prime drinkability – and if you like them layered and ethereal, with depth, intensity, and complexity for DAYS…look no further!
It simply ROCKS – with that roasted wild herb and wildflower aroma, then sour cherries, mulberries, pine needles, and blood orange, with punctuations of boysenberries and blackberries throughout. Whispers of sage and minty tobacco, with a dash of cassis and black cherries, and a final flourish of sanguine iron ore…this may not be Napa – but HOT DANG!...is it ever compelling! Wine Spectator called it “a delicious mountain Cab” while Decanter praised the way it “balances Old World elegance with the fleshy dark fruit intensity of the California coast”...and both are simply spot on. The fruit hails from a single parcel of 40+ year old, dry-farmed vines on the plateau of the Santa Cruz Mountains dubbed the Chaîne d'Or (golden chain) by early California winemaking pioneer Paul Masson – and if you’re looking for an utterly epic, spell-binding, and totally unique Cali-Cab – allow me to quote another golden chained favorite, the one and only Mr. T!
I pity the fool that misses out on this 95 POINT Cali-Cab – a historic wine at a memorable $71 OFF – doesn’t come around every day…so make some yours while it lasts!
** P.S. – Wishing a very HAPPY BIRTHDAY to my big brother. The best brother a guy could ask for…and I’m deeply sorry I moved up to Napa, got you into killer wines, and left you permanently broke as a result…my bad. Love ya! **
