Jolie-Laide Syrah North Coast 2022
You bet! Galloni called it “another stellar wine from Jolie-Laide,” and if you’ve never had these underground wines with the hypnotically cool, yearly-revolving labels – TODAY is your day!
JOLIE-LAIDE! Oh, lordy…does that ever take me back! And OVER 60% OFF?! Be still, my heart!!! This MICRO-production winery (about 500 cases a year…TOTAL) is THE winery that introduced me to the rare and obscure wines that California had to offer – from Mondeuse, to Trousseau Gris, to Cabernet Pfeffer, and more – and they’ve been a personal favorite for YEARS! We’ve never…NEVER…been lucky enough to score an offer’s worth of these wines – but that all changes right…freaking…NOW!!!
You’ll find this exact same bottle gracing the lists of some of the coolest and most cutting-edge restaurants in the country – like Dan Barber’s Blue Hill at Stone Barns (2 Michelin stars), Single Thread Farms (3 Michelin stars), and other such stalwarts like Danny Meyer’s Union Square Cafe and Sean Brock’s Husk. You better believe that if any of their somms see this offer, they are buying CASES at this incredible price!
Can you BLAME them? Cool-climate, gently-extracted, delicately-handled, other-worldly GORGEOUS Syrah is my spirit animal…so excuse me if I howl at the moon for a moment here. AAaaahhwooooooo!!! Ok…let’s get after it! Cool sites throughout Sonoma, plus 30% of arguably the TIPPY-TOP BEST Syrah vineyard in California, up at HAWKES BUTTE vineyard in Mendocino’s Yorkville Highlands, make this a compelling case for my penultimate winter red. And THE PRICE?! Way UNDER $20 is like nothing I’ve ever seen for Jolie-Laide…so I am officially backing up the truck here!
Smoky, savage, and fantastically floral – candied violets laced with lavender pastilles, and this blueberry compote, with freshly cracked black pepper, and smoldering sage, with charred rosemary, and this lovely, licorice character that winds around a volcanic and mineral edge that extends this all very…very impressively. I’m usually all about what’s in the bottle kind of guy, but you gotta admit – these labels sure don’t suck! Scott and Jenny choose a new theme every single release, highlighting local artists, and making for the sort of memorable – yet changeable – label series which compares with the likes of Mouton Rothschild and Le Pergole Torte for sheer uniqueness. 92 POINTS for Cali-Syrah is simultaneously impressive and egregiously low in my book…but read the full review below, don’t focus on the score, and tell me that doesn’t sound like the sort of wine you want to drink all…winter…LONG! For just $17?!
Stop it. Jolie-Laide might mean pretty-ugly in French…but the wine is 100% Jolie. Now…missing out? That could be Laide, indeed!
While it lasts!
