It’s getting a little late in the day, so how about a little Saturday trivia to spark things up?! What do LITTORAI, AUTEUR, COBB, and FAILLA have in common? No – it’s not simply that they make up a who’s who list of the tippy-top BEST Pinot producers in California. (Though that is 110% true in my book.) It’s the WENDLING VINEYARD!!!Â
FEL’s utterly delectable 2022 Pinot makes use of this prime site as well, and even though it was never submitted for scores (the original owner of the winery, the old Breggo Cellars, bought back the land in 2023 and rebooted the Breggo brand) the 2020, 2019, and 2018 vintage of this baby snagged 95, 94, and 96 POINTS respectively from Wine Enthusiast. So…pedigree assured? I’d say so! This parcel is at the edge of Anderson Valley’s famed “Deep End” – set high on a hill above the valley proper, in full view of the winds and crashing waves of the mighty Pacific that meets the coast a mere nine miles away. Organically and biodynamically farmed, on red, sandy loam soils, and planted by the legendary Paul Ardzrooni – Wendling is a TOP Mendo site for world-class Pinot Noir. To have this for WAY under $30 – and at a whopping 66+% OFF is a real coup.Â
The wine opens with that delicate baby powder note of lilacs and white flowers, then cool blueberries, alpine strawberries, and black raspberries. Some pine needle freshness, followed by orange zest and cinnamon…and this gorgeous peacock is just starting to STRUT! Perfectly balanced, and flawlessly complex yet integrated…you’re gonna LOVE it. And the PRICE!!!Â
