Ernest Vineyards Edaphos Ossum Epiphanea Vol 2. California 2022
So…BLEND is the Peewee’s Playhouse word of the day, today, good people! And this 93-point incredibly rare CHAMP from the eastern reaches of California is one of the CRAZIEST wines you’ve ever tasted!!!
But 93 POINTS from Decanter? For an INCREDIBLE under $15 price??? Say LESS. Y’all hardcore readers might recognize the Ernest Vineyards name – we’ve just discovered them several months back and they’ve become a quick favorite, both to you and here around the office (cool labels, crazy prices, and light, fresh, and uniquely off-the-wall bottles make spreadsheets, endless emails, and employee handbook proofreads SOOO much better!). They typically champion California’s cool climate terroirs to tout their incredible expressiveness but today – we’ve got the most INSANE and rarest blends they’ve ever crafted! A hyper-fresh, totally BEFUDDLING blend of white and red grapes, from the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains, tucked right between the entrance to King’s Canyon and the world’s most massive trees at Sequoia National Park…at a melon-thumping 63+% OFF!!!
This is a hot, new, up-n-coming Cali-producer that is already getting heaps of critical praise. Vinous came out swinging, saying “This is a terrific set of new releases…Edaphos is a range of more experimental wines from various appellations. In recent years, winemaker Joseph Ryan has really dialed in his approach here. The wines offer tons of brightness and energy…The future looks very promising.”
So…what exactly is so “experimental” mean here? Welp, how about a 100% field blend (54% alicante bouschet, 12% marsanne, 12% mourvèdre 12% roussanne, 7% grenache, 3% petite sirah), all fermented together, from the Cedars View vineyard…I mean, who the heck specializes in alicante bouschet, for Pete’s sake? Pretty sure the answer is no one…at least not since Kennedy was president in 1963. But – all hyperbole aside…I’m FEELING this right now! This is light, high-toned, floral, and pretty, with a smoky, earthy spice character and plenty of bubbly berry-driven fruits. Think coastal pinot, with lean and spicy Bandol elements, and whispers of Cru Beaujolais for good measure. I’m scoring a handful for my Thanksgiving turkey this year – I think that brings me up to 10 bottles already earmarked for the day (hmm, might need a BIGGER bird!). 93 POINTS and UNDER $15 a pop makes this a strictly no-brainer type offer, good people.
While it lasts!!!
