Domaine Cabirau’s “Second Effort” is actually the flagship cuvée of the estate – from up to 70 year-old vines that sit in the shadow of the historic Château de Quéribus, the last Cathar stronghold and one of the “Five Sons of Carcassonne” that defended the old French border from Spanish invasions a few centuries back. Go on and Google it – it looks like a castle from Monty Python’s Quest for the Holy Grail – and one sip of this inky dark and totally beguiling beast has me every bit as giddy as a Camelot showtune. Black olives, and smoked meats, with crushed berries of all shapes and colors – black currants, and raspberries, strawberries and boysenberries, with a hint of fig jam, and this cooling mint and fresh herb sensation that makes this *POP*!  It’s so reminiscent of Châteauneuf-du-Pape it's scary – ‘cause I’ve yet to see a CdP that can hold a candle to this sort of value. Way, WAY more complex than any $35 bottle has any business being – but when you slash that retail by a full 60% LESS – this is sure to go in the all-time, steal-of-a-deal, Last Bottle Hall of Fame!
