Saint-Émilion Grand Cru, party people! At the very best price in the ENTIRE world, no less! Yeehaw! Man, oh man, I do LOVE me some 2018 Bordeaux – especially Right Bank stunners out of Saint-Émilion like this! The year is prized for this rare amalgamation of intense concentration, upfront approachability, and age-worthy balance...and this gorgeous Grand Cru has all of that in spades! That’s a rare and powerful combo, to boot – not unlike the Liger – which is pretty much my favorite animal. (And bred for its skills in magic!) But if you don’t get that DYNAMITE reference – don’t fret…’cause this explosive Bordeaux can dance solo just fine!
Adding that spectacular cherry on top – the man, myth, and legend…MICHEL ROLLAND! He’s been consulting with the Dassault family for over 40 years, and this opulent, polished, and scintillating beauty has his famous fingerprints all over it! Good ol’ Jeb called it “another gem of 2018” in his 94 POINT review – and that barely scratches the surface here. Floral notes of violets and roses, with this heady cherry kirsch note, plenty of miner-laced graphite sensibilities, and the pure hedonistic pleasure of perfectly ripe blackberries, crushed under their own weight in a never-ending bowl of sheer delight! This is a glass that is impossible to put down until it is empty – and the toasty, creamy notes of milk chocolate, and vanilla beans evoke the texture of liquid cashmere.
A full seven years since harvest has worked wonders on this baby – and now – is it ever coming together! This is CRUISING with the top down, racing along that ultra-high and luxurious plateau of classy and thrilling Right Bank Bordeaux. This has been THRIVING since it first hit my glass (and yes, somehow I managed to limit myself to just one) but only got more expressive and sumptuous with a few swirls and 30 minutes of checking neglected emails. Lots of life left – and even more to love! For way, WAY under $40 – this is utterly prime Bordeaux, and peaking at just the right time – like Journalism in the Preakness!
