97 POINTS, one of the oldest estates on the Right Bank of Bordeaux (1513!!), and truly a shooting star in terms of quality -- this one is at the TOP of the arc, especially in a solid Saint-Emilion vintage like 2018! So…who’s heard of a gent by the name of Bertrand de Villaines? I’ll give you a hint…DRC!!! Yes, the man behind the most famous Burgundy estate in the world also heads up this Saint-Emilion STUNNER – and the quality has leapfrogged over countless top Right Bank estates since he took over in 2006. Now, do I have your attention?! We’ve been hunting for more of this beauty since the early days of Covid – but perseverance pays off, and guess what just landed in our warehouse a couple of weeks back?! YES!!! Seven years and striding like Aragorn – this is undoubtedly drinking as well as it EVER has…and that is saying SOMETHING!
An explosion that grabs a hold of your nose like the world’s oldest magic trick, bringing wave upon wave of saltwater taffy, and crushed lilacs, with bay leaf, and kirsch…and I haven’t even taken my first sip yet! Oh, baby…what…a…TREAT! The first sip definitely does not disappoint, with each successive greedy gulp revealing plums, black currants, with dusty blackberries, and Morello cherries, then graphite and pencil lead for days, all wrapped up in this inky, balsamic note that keeps the finish driving like it’s Le Mans. This is Right Bank Bordeaux as it should be – that perfect compromise of power, elegance, heavenly fruit, and earthly minerality. It’s lush, yet never heavy, and structured, but oh-so delightfully integrated – just a mind-boggling opportunity to drink top-flight Bordeaux, perfectly in its prime drinking window, at a price that makes it all seem downright impossible! Pinch me!
