Château Grand-Pontet Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé 2020
Wine Wednesday score! Killer, 93 POINT Right Bank Bordeaux, from a long-standing estate that has really stepped up its game! (So much so that Château Haut-Brion stepped in to buy this property and finish this exceptional vintage!)
Oh, dear Saint-Émilion…how I miss thee!!!!! The cobbled streets, the calf-burning steps, the incredible cathedral, the even more incredible food…just AAAAHHHH!!! If you haven’t been, add this to the top of your list. If you have – there’s a good chance you miss it as much as I – and friends, have I got just the salve for THAT! 93 POINT Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé goodness, that just sucks you in, sinks its teeth in you, and never lets go! This is classic, dare I say ethereal stuff, with a friendly enough demeanor to enjoy now, and a pedigree and structure to cellar for decades to come. All for a gnat’s whisker over $30 a bottle?!?!
YES!!! Y’all eagle-eyed Last Bottlers might have seen this flash across your screens during our Raj Parr Takeover from a few weeks back. Raj raved about it, we obviously LOVED it, and we were almost (ALMOST) sad when we blitzed through those bottles in about 30 minutes. So we called our folks in Bordeaux and begged for more…TA-DAAAA!!!!
“Great nose of black cherry, cassis, and a touch of sweet tobacco. The wine is refined and complex, with silky tannins framing layers of dark fruit, graphite, and subtle spice. Mineral tension and vibrant freshness carry through on the palate. This wine has a great few decades ahead.” – Raj Parr
I’m on board with all of that – maybe adding in a sprinkle of black plums and smoldering sage, and this brooding, inky disposition that tells me this beauty is in its Al Pacino Scent of a Woman phase (“I’m just getting warmed up!”) It’s HUGE, y’all…bold, powerful, and impressive 93 POINT Bordeaux at the sort of price that would make most Napa Cabs WEEP. All for UNDER $35?! Hoo-AHH, indeed, good people! I can just imagine barrel samples of this baby being a MAJOR part of what sealed the deal and convinced the folks from the iconic FIRST GROWTH Château Haut-Brion to step in and buy this property in 2021 – and trust your web-based wine merchant – this is definitely an estate to keep on your radar!
Barely enough for an offer…so grab yours WHILE IT LASTS!
