Chapter 24 Pinot Noir The Flood Willamette Valley 2015
93 POINT Willamette Valley Pinot Noir – from the same team that is behind cult-favorite, Rose & Arrow! Ten years young at a price that will simply rock...your...WORLD!
I mean…are we CRUSHING it in 2026 or what?!?! The hits have been non-stop since the ball dropped, and we’re doing the lord’s work to ensure there is simply NO WAY you could ever justify drinking the kool-aid of a Dry January. (As if you needed a reason to abstain from abstinence…am I right?) ANYWHO, bring on THE FLOOD!
2015! It’s been a hot minute, so in case you forgot…this was a flat-out SPECTACULAR vintage for Willamette Valley Pinot Noir – originally blessed with a 95 POINT rating for the entire vintage by the good folks at Wine Spectator – and revered for a combination of concentration, power, and balance that is just gorgeously suited for aging. And wouldn’t you know it?! A DECADE later, and that is just…what’s…on…the…TABLE! Bursting out the glass with plenty of inky color, and supple aromatics of rose petals, black trumpet mushrooms, and dried peonies, with crushed blueberries, black cherries, and lovely little pops of baked plums – I’d say this is nuanced, yet fresh, and plenty vibrant, while still showcasing that immaculate wild earth, dusty saddle leather, and comforting herb note that develops over time in those rare Pinots actually worthy of a decade in the cellar. And is this ever WORTHY!  My cork came out clean, whole, and without a milliliter of saturation – but it is ten years young, so be gentle, people! The reward is immediate, and fully entrancing, with sweet cherries, tart cranberries, and a kiss of red apple skins. Soft and lengthy finish, too…just WOW!
The Flood scored a blend of fruit from four vineyards across the Chehalem Mountains, Yamhill-Carlton, and Ribbon Ridge for this wine – all focusing on alluvial, gravelly, and clay-rich soils – before aging in 50% new French oak for a quick 12 months hibernation before bottling. This now shuttered brand was the precursor to the incredibly cult-y ROSE & ARROW winery – founded by the enigmatic Mark Tarlov (who started Evening Lands with famed Burgundian vintner, Dominique Lafon) – Mark partnered with La Romanée’s own, Louis-Michel Liger-Belair, for this project, which eventually morphed into Rose & Arrow. Incredible pedigree and PERFECT provenance combine to make for one EPIC Pinot deal. 93 POINTS, and UNDER $20…whatever are you waiting for?!?!
