What’s it like, you say? Um…CLASSIC!!! Le Mesnil is my tried-n-true pick for the most expressive, identifiable terroir in all of Champagne. Bubbles from this ancient seafloor, chalk and limestone riddled site just taste like…Le Mesnil – and whether it is a $1,000+ bottle of Krug Clos du Mesnil or this Under $50 Sleeper Cellars Grand Cru Champagne – you can find the same characteristics of laser-like, precisely focused orchard fruit, and creamy yet zippy minerality that reverberates across the entire range of bottles from this hallowed ground. This extraordinary bottle bursts with yellow apples, and golden plums, uplifted by floral elements of mandarin blossoms and acacia flowers. A light nuttiness of raw almond slivers, with a vein of chalky, seashell minerality that gives this both structure and finish. It’s round throughout, but gorgeously clean and focused on the finish, making this an easy bottle for finishing off in record time.
The family behind this is technically a Négociant Manipulant – as they don’t own all of the land they farm – but every plot they work with is under long-term contracts, and they oversee the farming of each and every vine that makes it into their program.
