Champagne J.M. Goulard Special Club Extra Brut 2017

CHAMPAGNE SATURDAY! Special Club? 97 POINTS too?? YES!! Don’t mind if I do! I’m proud to confess I have never…EVER… turned away the opportunity to drink Special Club Champagne. It’s the ULTIMATE stamp of quality in the wine world – always GROWER produced, always peer and expert tasted (blind, mind you…first as a still vin clair wine, then again as a bubbly to ensure it still meets the impeccably high standard). THEN – and only then – does it get bottled, labeled, and sold in that oh-so rare, totally ICONIC Special Club glass.

Oh, sweet maple syrup – this is DELICIOUS! Creamy richness and lively effervescence coat the tongue like Grand Cru White Burgundy, followed by wave after wave of crunchy, oyster shell minerality carrying these sweet and flavorful little pockets of stone fruits, golden apples, and a never-ending finish! We’re talking over $40 BELOW retail, and 97 POINTS…I mean, C’MON!

J.M. Goulard is a family-run domaine based in the tiny village of Prouilly, near the Massif de Saint Thierry, in the Vallée de la Marne. Pinot Noir normally reigns supreme here, but the 2017 is an evocative and rip-roaringly delicious blend of 40% Chardonnay, 30% Pinot Noir, and 30% Pinot Meunier. I can’t even remember the last time we featured BALLER Champagne — let alone Special Club — that SLAYS as much as this!
