BODEGA LOS HELECHOS! It means “the ferns” – a nod to the feathered plants that are speckled across the Uco Valley, joining the wildflowers, streams, Middle-Earthian mountain ranges, and untamed herbs that abound this otherworldly paradise. Cooler temps but lots of sunshine, a medley of clay and rocky soils, and soaring altitudes yield tiny amounts of grapes with MONSTROUS concentration and EPIC flavor profiles – this is one mighty CAB FRANC!Â
I’ll say this plainly – DO. NOT. MISS. THIS! The vineyards of Los Helechos – and this delectable bottling – deliver a ferociously good time! A little sit for 30% of the blend on French oak barrels for a year gives the wine something almost caramel-like and nutty, toasty, and warming – a certain and stunning contrast to all the crunchy red fruits and purple florals that charge in on first swirl, sniff, and sip, followed by fire roasted sweet peppers, with a hint of celery salt and balsamic, and a shake of nutmeg for good measure. Smoothly refined tannins, like rubbing the base of my golden retriever’s ear, and the MOST captivating structure bring this home and make it punch Andes-levels above its $16 tag! Seriously…cab franc devotee or not, you NEED some of this 97 POINTER in your grips, like, immediately!!! Don’t let it slip by like the last few days of summer. Get on it before the gettin’s gone!
