100% Sauvignon Blanc from flinty silex soils on the banks of the Loire River – all frosty and zesty and zingy and so tingly and fresh – Coteaux du Giennois is the little Loire region that could…and should be on your radar! Less than 500 acres total, just northeast of Sancerre, and home to about 35 producers. There’s a reason you likely haven’t heard of Coteaux du Giennois – but longtime Last Bottle favorites over at Domaine Benoît Chauveau are here to change all that!
This is kind of like Baby Sancerre – but for a price that grown-ups everywhere can appreciate. UNDER $20 for this kind of titillating quality is INSANE – but hey, that’s what we DO! Silex is crazy rare and highly prized in this region, where most of the vineyard land is calcareous limestone. Here, flint – that shines almost like shards of metal scattered about the land – gives this absolutely BANGIN’ wine its characteristic smoky minerality…like fireworks, or gunpowder. And this definitely BOOMS with citrus too – lemon, lime, pomelo – all hyper-fresh and cooler than the other side of the pillow. There’s this white flower/almost tropical kiss, just super vibrant and ready for anything you want to throw at it…a dozen oysters? Two dozen?! YES!!! You will LOVE it, as you all have every other bottle we’ve ever sold from this rockstar producer – this is TRULY one of the best under-the-radar whites in the world today!
The Chauveau family has been farming here since the 1800s, but all the cred (and not NEARLY enough praise) belongs to Benoît – for uniting the scattered parcels and shifting all focus towards grape growing and wine-making magic! He bought out his parents and their parents – solidifying the domaine that stretches across 17 hectares throughout the Loire Valley, including these 2 hectares of Sauvignon Blanc on top of a hill in the Coteaux du Giennois. Not to be pun-y…but this ROCKS! I’m getting two more cases – this is my default house white, always crowd-pleasing, and always gone before I can ever say Côteaux du Giennois in my most pompous French accent!
